Life after the Army

Wojciech introduced the speaker for tonight: Mr. Julius van Osterzee who, after his studies as a structural engineer, worked for the army and had the occasion to travel around the world to perform his duties.
Mr van Osterzee started his talk by saying that, when his retirement started to approach, he began to wonder what to do once his working days were over. After consultation with his partner he decided that he wanted to sail the world.
The speaker then went on to explain why he chose to use a catamaran (comfort and space compared to a mono-hull) and why he finally decided to build it himself. He also explained that his project, in addition to this already difficult task, also needed several "side competences" like learning languages and improving navigational skills.
Mr. van Osterzee through some pictures, showed us the progress which he has already made: the two hulls are now finished and he is now concentrating on the central part. He also stated that even if the main building is done by himself several professional help were needed for some specific jobs such as the epoxy and glass laying, the fairing of the hulls as well as the set up of the electric and electronic systems.
The speaker then stated that he expects to finish the boat in 4,500 total working hours and that his sailing itinerary will start from Europe, cross the Atlantic ocean to the Caribbean, sail the North America east coast up to Canada, then move southwards before crossing to South Africa. From there he plans to sail around Australia and move up north to Japan.
The presentation impressed the attendance which asked several questions, which were kindly answered by the speaker. Dev thanked Mr. van Osterzee on behalf of the Club and Ehsan presented him with a copy of our "Taste for Life" cookbook.
