International Fellowship Weekend 2018, Gala Dinner

About the project

Enjoy some wonderful events throughout an entire weekend hosted by the Rotary Club The Hague Metropolitan, in support of our project “Friends of Pantanal”, which aims to purchase a dental chair with various tools and a dental X-ray machine which will allow the doctors to further improve the life of those less fortunate, for the medical center in Pantanal, Belem, Brazil.

Pantanal is a neighbourhood of Belem which hosts nearly 400.000 inhabitants a third of which are children. Historically the neighbourhood was "famous" for being a leprosy colony and was thus avoided by everyone. In the 50's the leprosarium was transferred but the extreme poverty of the inhabitants has remained a grim constant.

In 2008, at the instigation of some Italian doctors who are regularly going to Brazil to perform pro bono work the association “Friends of Pantanal” was created with the goal to build in this poor neighbourhood a medical centre where local specialized doctors can exercise their profession for free (in Brazil the entire sanitary system is a paying one and large parts of the population can't afford it) by curing the persons in need and trying to teach to the children and their mothers the basic knowledge of hygiene so as to avoid the most common disease related to life in a "difficult environment".

The centre was inaugurated in 2012 and is open to any inhabitant of the Pantanal showing symptoms of illnesses, since then, it offers medical assistance and specialized visits for free. It is run by local doctors, who are already helping the local population, and a weekly rotation of specialists (gynaecologist, cardiologist, paediatrician, oculists) is provided.

The doctors practice both generic and specialist treatments and also try and teach the basic knowledge of sanitary education to mothers and children so as to try to reduce the risks of contracting diseases typical associated with the lack of hygiene and basic alimentation.

Yearly, the Italian doctors who started the project, travel to Pantanal, to make sure that the activities of the medical centre are run smoothly and to discuss the needs of the structure such as purchase/changing of medical equipment and pharmacy stocks.

How can we help?

The medical centre is now functioning on a steady state and treating more than 2000 patents each year but the centre has many needs to improve the services it can provide to the community, in particular there is still great need for medical equipment to make the doctor’s work more efficient and allow them to perform different specialized cares.

This year the medical centre has the need for dental equipment as this type of cares are almost absent and the doctors have identified that dental care and oral hygiene are very important as they would prevent a series of cascading problems.

We are therefore striving, under our motto “Service above self”, to purchase a dental chair with various tools and a dental X-ray machine which will allow the doctors to further improve the life of those less fortunate.

We are sure that, with your support and help, we will reach our goal and at the end of the project we will all have the best of rewards: knowing that we managed to improve the lives of people we will probably never meet.

Why not spend an entire weekend in The Hague?

We are organizing an entire weekend filled with activities in The Hague and some surrounding areas in support of our project “Friends of Pantanal”, which aims to purchase a dental chair with various tools and a dental X-ray machine which will allow the doctors to further improve the life of those less fortunate, for the medical center in Pantanal, Belem, Brazil.
